SUMMARY:Embracing Body Sovereignty During Medical Forensic Examinations
DESCRIPTION:Embracing Body Sovereignty During Medical Forensic Examinations \nDate: August 7\, 2025 at 2-3:30pm Eastern Time/1-2:30pm Central Time \nPresenters:\nChenel Vanden Berk\, BSFS\, JD\, RN\, SANE-A\, SANE-P\nInternational Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) \nKelsey Morris\, M.A\nInternational Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) \nThere have been reports of instances of interaction with healthcare\, for which a patient may have felt as though they were treated as if they were just a sum of physical parts that need fixing. This type of interaction can lead to the development of mistrust with the healthcare system\, leaving the patient feeling dehumanized. By contrast\, when a medical forensic exam is conducted by a trained clinician\, the exam process can be empowering to patients that have experienced interpersonal violence\, especially those that are American Indian/Alaska Native. The exam process allows these patients to receive medical care in a way that encourages body sovereignty. The promotion of patient’s having control over their own body is embedded throughout the medical forensic exam process. It embodies the essence of patient-centered care by asking the patient\, instead of taking from the patient. Allowing the establishment of physical boundaries instead of breaching boundaries\, while providing options to the patient. This approach may feel really important to American Indian/Alaska Native individuals. National guidance documents\, such as the National Protocol for Sexual Assault Medical Forensic Examinations Adult/Adolescents\, recommends that care be provided to patients that have experienced sexual violence\, in a manner that shifts the power dynamics from the clinician as the healer\, to the patient\, the person in need of healing. \nREGISTER FOR THE WEBINAR \nThis project was supported by Grant No. 15JOVW-23-GK-03969-INDI awarded by the Office on Violence Against Women\, U.S. Department of Justice. The opinions\, findings\, conclusions\, and recommendations expressed in this publication/program/exhibition are these of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the view of the U.S. Department of Justice.

SUMMARY:Civil Justice for Sex Trafficking & Sexual Assault Survivors in the United States
DESCRIPTION:Civil Justice for Sex Trafficking & Sexual Assault Survivors in the United States \nTODAY – Civil Justice for Sex Trafficking & Sexual Assault Survivors in the United States\nHosted by: Family Justice Center Alliance \nAbout\nThe civil justice system is drastically under-utilized by survivors to ensure they receive justice\, compensation\, and the resources to help them after victimization. While the criminal justice system targets and punishes the abusers\, it fails to provide recompense for survivors\, and it often overlooks the role of corporations and institutions in sex abuse and trafficking. Truly addressing and stopping sex abuse and trafficking requires tackling the problem from all angles. The civil justice system can fill in the gaps left in criminal cases. Yet\, the civil justice system is an option unknown to many survivors and those who work serving them.

SUMMARY:NCAI’s VAWA Task Force and UIHI Survey for Related Native Programs
DESCRIPTION:The “Sacred Responsibility: Protecting Our People” survey is intended for Native programs that primarily offer services related to domestic violence\, sexual assault\, human trafficking\, or other forms of violence. The survey is a collaboration with Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI)\, Alaska Native Women’s Resource Center\, National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center\, StrongHearts Native Helpline\, and Alliance of Tribal Coalitions to End Violence\, to better understand the current services and potential impacts of federal funding cuts to Native DV/SA/MMIP programs nationwide. \n  \nInformation gathered will be used to create a report for Congress\, the Trump Administration\, Tribal Nations\, Tribal Organizations\, and Urban Indian Organizations\, to advocate for continued federal funding to uphold treaty and trust responsibilities. This snapshot will offer the very first national picture of American Indian and Alaska Natives seeking services\, number of unmet requests\, and the potential impact of federal funding cuts. \nTAKE THE SURVEY

SUMMARY:National Day of Action
DESCRIPTION:June 5th\, 2025 is the National Day of Action to demand protection and investment in federal funding for sexual assault and domestic violence services and protection. \nThese resources provide critical services that ensure safety\, stability\, and recovery for victims and their children. Any change or reduction to this funding would jeopardize these vital services\, leaving survivors without the life-saving support they need to escape violence\, recover\, and heal. \nOn this National Day of Action\, contact your members of Congress and urge them to protect existing victim services funding and to support increased funding for victim services across the country. \nTAKE ACTION: \nWho is your Member of Congress?  \nYou can find your Senator at https://www.senate.gov/senators/contact and your Representative at https://ziplook.house.gov/htbin/findrep_house?ZIP=.  \nCall their office  \nTo contact your Senators and Representative by phone\, call the US Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected to these offices\, or find their phone numbers on their websites.  \nEmail their staff directly \nIf possible\, we recommend this method of contacting your Member’s office\, as it allows you to build a relationship with the staffer who is working on our issues for the Member of Congress and share your concerns directly with them. See here for a staff contact list. We suggest emailing their women’s issues staff\, their judiciary staff\, their legislative directors\, and their appropriations staff. \nEmail through their website  \nTo contact your Senators and Representatives by email\, go to their website and click on the ‘contact us’ link.
